About Rev. J. Kiggen

The late Rev. J. Kiggen was a Mill Hill Missionary and talented linguist, who served for many years in the greater Upper Nile region of present-day South Sudan, during the 1940s and early 1950s. He is responsible, together with another missionary, Father J.P. Crazzolara of the Comboni Missionaries, for transforming the oral language of the Nuer people (also known as "nei ti Naath") into a written form. He was responsible for creating the most extensive dictionary of the Nuer language ever created. Dr. Sharon Elaine Hutchinson is currently Professor Emerita of Anthropology and African Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She is also the Director of South Sudan Cultural Productions LLC, a Madison-based publishing company she founded in 2023. Her research relationship with, and scholarly commitment to the people of South Sudan--and especially, to the nei ti Naath or Nuer cultural and linguistic communities, wherever they may reside--now extends back in time for almost a half-century.
